A heartfelt ride for the Stollery

My

Crushing his impressive fundraising goal and earning the top individual fundraiser for Life Cycle, we asked Mahmoud to share his story with us.

What inspired you to participate in Life Cycle?

I have always been passionate about cycling for a cause. When I discovered Life Cycle’s mission to support children’s hospitals across Alberta, I knew I had to get involved. Witnessing the Stollery’s profound impact on my friend’s family and many other young lives motivated me to act and give back through something I love.

Who were you riding for?

I was riding for my friend’s son, Hussein, who was born on July 10, 2019.
He was born with a rare heart condition called tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), involving four related heart defects that affect blood flow to the lungs and through the heart. TOF is typically repaired through open-heart surgery shortly after birth or later in infancy. Hussein underwent major surgery at just 90 days old. I wanted to honor his bravery, resilience and support the hospital that gave him a second chance at life.

Can you describe your fundraising journey?

Fundraising was truly a community effort. I began by sharing Hussein’s story with friends and family through social media and messaging all my contacts. I sent messages up until the last day of the ride. Also, I reached out to businesses and relief organizations for ride sponsorships and they were incredibly supportive. Consistent updates on my cycling progress and the cause kept people engaged and motivated to contribute.

Why should others get involved in events like Life Cycle?

Events like Life Cycle offer a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference. Not only do you get to challenge yourself physically, but you also become part of a larger community dedicated to helping those in need. The sense of accomplishment and the joy of knowing you’ve contributed to saving lives is unparalleled. Everyone has something to give, whether it’s time, effort, or donations, every bit helps.
