Meet Adriana

2024-Staff-Feature-Adriana

Adriana is is excited to be bringing music therapy into the Emergency department (ED) at the Stollery — her position in the ED is the first of its kind in Canada.

Most often, Adriana supports patients during IV insertions, bloodwork, puffer administrations, and other necessary procedures. Music therapy looks different from session to session — she might be playing instruments and singing to provide diversion during procedures for one patient, while playing soft, calming music on her guitar to support sleep or reduce anxiety for another patient. She also collaborates with the full-time music therapist, Karly, who works with inpatients.

Outside of work, Adriana has been enjoying planning her wedding with her fiancé. Together, they like bike riding with friends and playing Magic the Gathering (which she admits, is a bit nerdy).

Let’s find out more about Adriana:

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy so much about my job! My favorite part is meeting the kids I work with and being a part of their health journeys. Music has been a great tool for me to connect with kids and families. Patients see so many new faces when they come to the Emergency department, so it is such an honour to be welcomed into their room and have the opportunity to support them with what they are going through.

How long have you worked at the Stollery?

For three months (since December of 2023).

Do you have a standout Stollery memory?

When I started working at the Stollery in December, the hospital was over-capacity due to the respiratory illness season. I was amazed to see how staff remained calm, patient and positive despite how crazy busy everything was. Being a part of this busy time made me really proud to be a part of the Stollery team!

Do you have a personal connection to the Stollery?

Growing up in Edmonton, I have always been aware of the great care that the Stollery provides for patients and families. I grew up playing sports, so I’ve come here for my various injuries (broken nose, broken arm, torn ACL…), and the Stollery has supported many of my friends and family members over the years.

Are you a Foundation donor or volunteer?

My family and I have donated to the Foundation in the past, and I have been lucky to have attended Snowflake Gala. It is important for me to be involved in the Foundation because now, as a staff member, I directly see the amazing positive impact that the Foundation has on patient and family care.

Have donor funds directly impacted the area you work in?

Yes! I am so grateful that the Foundation sees the benefit of music therapy in health care. The Foundation has funded my position in the Emergency department (ED), which is the first of its kind in Canada. We are excited to grow the music therapy team and have the opportunity for research in the ED. Staff, patients and families have been very open to and accepting of having music therapy in the ED, and it is so important to continue funding for these non-pharmacological approaches to pain management and health care.

Do you have a favourite Stollery event?

My favourite Stollery event is Snowflake Gala. I have attended the Gala once so far, and I was amazed at all the hard work the Foundation put into it. It was so special to see Stollery kids share their stories and advocate for the high-quality care they deserve. The event provides donors with so many opportunities to continue supporting the amazing care that the Stollery provides.

What is your favourite kids’ book?

When I was about five years old, I was obsessed with a book called The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. I listened to the CD recording of it every night before bed (even when it wasn’t Christmastime!). The story shares a message of the importance of kindness towards strangers. You never know what challenges someone is experiencing, so why not be kind!

Do you have a favourite Disney princess or superhero?

Moana is my favorite Disney Princess! I relate to her love for the ocean and being around water, and I am inspired by her perseverance and courage. I appreciate Moana’s love and respect for her family, and how she also fights for change and what she believes in.

Music has been a great tool for me to connect with kids and families. Patients see so many new faces when they come to the Emergency department, so it is such an honour to be welcomed into their room and have the opportunity to support them with what they are going through.
